Mini-sessions are one of the simplest ways to update family portraits without committing to a full portrait session. They’re efficient, relaxed, and perfect for families who want beautiful images without dedicating an entire hour to taking pictures.

As a professional photographer since 2006, I’ve spent nearly two decades helping families know what to expect ahead of time so the entire experience feels smooth, relaxed, and enjoyable — and produces better photographs.

This guide will walk you through:

If you’re searching for family mini-sessions in Laramie WY 82070, this guide will give you a clear idea of how the experience works.

What Is a Mini-Session?

A mini-session is a short portrait session designed to create a small collection of beautiful family photographs in a simple, efficient format.

Heather Lilly Photography mini-sessions include:

20-minute portrait session
Outdoor location in Laramie, Wyoming
Private online proofing gallery
The option to purchase the images you love

Mini-sessions work especially well for:

• Families updating yearly portraits
• Christmas card photos
• Parents with young children (aka “littles”)
• Busy families (hello sports families!) who can carve out 20 minutes

Mini-sessions are scheduled in one-hour blocks, allowing up to three families to be photographed back-to-back at one location.

This structure allows families to enjoy a professional photography experience while keeping the session short and relaxed. There’s multiple links on my website where you can book on the mini-session link, here’s one under the main menu: services, family, then scroll down to find the ‘book a spot’ button:

When Mini-Sessions Are Offered

Since relocating from Colorado to Wyoming, Heather Lilly Photography now offers family mini-sessions once per month from March through October in Laramie, Wyoming.

Most sessions are scheduled on the third Saturday of the month, although dates may occasionally shift depending on scheduling… and weather (we are currently having 3 days of extreme wind conditions, and that would definitely move mini’s to another weekend).

Sessions are offered during the two lighting windows that produce the most flattering natural light:

Morning Sessions

Shortly after breakfast when the light is soft and even.

Golden Hour Sessions

About one hour before sunset when Wyoming skies produce that beautiful warm glow photographers love.

Weather and scheduling occasionally require adjustments, but the goal is always to photograph during the best possible lighting conditions.

If the third Saturday of the month doesn’t work for your schedule, you’re welcome to reach out through my contact page to see if another Saturday may be possible. I’m always happy to check my calendar if my schedule allows.

Mini-Session Locations in Laramie

All mini-sessions take place within Laramie city limits (82070).

Country friends — I see you. 🤍 If you’re just outside of town and interested in a session on your property, feel free to reach out and we can chat about options.

Rather than locking into one location months in advance, session locations are finalized the week of the session.

Laramie parks and trails often host community events on weekends, so selecting the location closer to the session date allows flexibility if a location becomes unavailable.

More importantly, it allows me to choose the location with the best natural lighting, which ultimately matters more than the exact background.

You will receive final location details the week of your session.

The good news in Laramie is that almost everything is about 10 minutes away, making locations easy to reach.

Preparing for Your Mini-Session

Mini-sessions operate on a strict schedule, so arriving prepared helps everything run smoothly.

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early for parking and walking time.

If parking and walking take longer than expected, that time will come out of the scheduled session. Twenty minutes for a portrait session goes by very quickly, which is why arriving a little early makes a big difference.

Before arriving, please make sure everyone is ready with:

• Wrinkle-free clothing
• Clean shoes
• Styled hair
• Empty pockets (phones, keys, etc.)

After booking, you will receive this Pinterest inspiration board to help with wardrobe ideas and color coordination.

Choosing outfits within the same color palette typically produces the most polished and timeless results. You can also look into capsule wardrobes.

Wyoming wind often makes an appearance, so hairstyles that tolerate a little movement tend to photograph best.

What Happens During Your Session

Mini-sessions move quickly, but they are designed to feel relaxed and natural.

During the session I guide families through a mix of:

• natural standing or seated portraits
• relaxed interaction and movement
• individual portraits of the kids
• full family images

Most family combinations take 2–3 minutes each, which allows us to capture a variety of expressions without the session feeling rushed.

The goal is always to create images that feel genuine, comfortable, and natural – with a mix of poses and prompts.

After Your Session

Within 1–4 weeks of your session you will receive access to your private proofing gallery.

This gallery contains lightly edited preview images so you can select the photographs you would like to purchase.

Proof galleries remain active for 30 days.

Most families typically select 3–10 favorite images from their session: everyone together, kids, together & parents together is a common baseline for three poses.

Rather than requiring clients to purchase an entire gallery, images are purchased individually so you only pay for the photographs you truly love and I’m only editing what you will actually use.

Once selections are made and payment is completed, those images receive full signature editing. This includes skin retouching, fixing hair and minor distractions.

Because I work full-time outside of HLP Monday through Friday and complete photography editing during evenings and weekends, final edited images are typically delivered within 1–4 weeks after image selections are made.

Final images are delivered through a new gallery with download access, and downloads are only available for the images that have been purchased.

Some galleries will be delivered sooner, but I always prefer to under-promise and over-deliver so expectations remain clear for everyone.

Is a Mini-Session Right for Your Family?

Mini-sessions are ideal for families who:

• want a quick portrait update
• have a smaller family group
• are comfortable with a shorter session
• are flexible about location

If your family includes grandparents, larger groups, kids greatly outnumber parents, or many combination photos, a full one-hour family session is usually the better fit. Just use my website’s contact link to inquire about that booking process.

Full sessions allow more time for relationship portraits, relaxed interaction, and a wider variety of images.
