A New Chapter: Heather Lilly Photography in Laramie, Wyoming

After nearly two decades behind the camera, I’ve learned something important: photography is rarely just about photographs. It’s about seasons of life, the people we love, and the stories that unfold along the way.

Heather Lilly Photography was established in Colorado. I grew up there, built friendships there, and had the privilege of photographing countless families, seniors, weddings, branding clients, and meaningful milestones throughout the state. Colorado will always hold a special place in my heart.

But life has a way of unfolding in unexpected—and often beautiful—ways.

Last November, I received a full-time job offer that I simply could not refuse. As a single mom, stability and provision for my boys has always been a top priority. This opportunity offered exactly that: a chance to use my eclectic, experience-driven background in a role that values connection, creativity, and people.

So in December, I began a new full-time career path in Laramie, Wyoming.

And in early February, my two boys—now 12 and 15—joined me here.

If I’m being honest, the path that led us here wasn’t something I could have orchestrated on my own. Looking back, I can clearly see the Lord’s hand guiding each step—through people, circumstances, and opportunities that opened at just the right time.

Despite many sincere efforts to build a full-time path in Colorado—through photography, virtual assistance, or other opportunities—the doors that needed to open simply didn’t. And yet here in Laramie, the right door did open—one that provides stability, meaningful work, and a new chapter for our family.

Sometimes the road we wouldn’t have chosen ourselves becomes the one we’re most grateful for.

And that’s exactly how this season feels.

Finding Our Rhythm in Laramie

Laramie is a special place.

It’s a town that feels both wide open and deeply connected at the same time. The pace is slower, the skies feel bigger, and there’s a sense of community here that we’ve quickly grown to appreciate.

My boys are settling into school and new routines. After nine years of homeschooling—a season we’ll always treasure—they’ve shown remarkable resilience and excitement adjusting to this new chapter.

One of the things I admire most about them is their ability to adapt when they see purpose and opportunity in a change. Laramie offers hands-on learning experiences, outdoor adventure, and practical opportunities that simply weren’t available to us before.

Watching them grow through this transition has been one of the greatest gifts of this season.

As a family, we’re learning to appreciate the rhythms of Wyoming life—work and school during the week, community connections throughout town, and Sundays reserved for church, rest, and resetting for the week ahead.

It’s simple. It’s grounding. And it feels right.

Reflecting on Photography in This Season

As this new chapter unfolded, I spent a lot of time reflecting on what photography should look like for HLP moving forward.

Photography has been part of my life for more than twenty years. It’s a craft I deeply respect and a creative outlet that has allowed me to meet extraordinary people and tell meaningful stories.

With a full-time career I love and two teenage boys at home, I knew something had to change.

Events, large productions, and extensive branding projects require a tremendous amount of behind-the-scenes work—planning, coordination, editing, and logistics—that my current schedule simply doesn’t allow.

Rather than stretching myself thin trying to do everything, I’ve chosen to return to the heart of why I started photography in the first place: meaningful portrait sessions with wonderful people.

In this season, I’m focusing on high school senior portraits and family portraits in Laramie, Wyoming.

Heather Lilly Photography Going Forward

Effective immediately, Heather Lilly Photography will operate on a limited seasonal schedule in Laramie, Wyoming.

From March through the end of October, I will offer portrait sessions on select Saturdays only.

This schedule allows me to maintain the balance that matters most in this season of life: family time, meaningful work, and the creative joy that photography brings.

For now, my portrait work will focus on two areas I’ve always loved most:

• High School Senior Portraits
• Family Portraits (including dogs and equine)

At this time, I’m stepping away from branding photography, events, and larger projects simply to honor the bandwidth I realistically have available.

Sometimes the best work comes not from doing more—but from doing the right things well.

The Portrait Experience

Portrait sessions with Heather Lilly Photography will take place during the two times of day when natural light is at its most beautiful.

Morning Sessions
Shortly after breakfast, when the light is soft and gentle.

Golden Hour Sessions
Approximately one hour before sunset, when the Wyoming sky creates that warm, cinematic glow photographers love so much.

Lighting has always been at the heart of my photography style. I’ve built my work around natural light, long lenses, and beautiful backgrounds that allow people to truly shine in front of the camera.

Golden hour and good attitudes—that’s the vibe I’m aiming for.

Family portrait sessions will be offered in two formats:

20-minute mini sessions
60-minute full portrait sessions

Senior portrait sessions will be offered in:

1-hour sessions
2-hour sessions depending on location and outfit changes.

Each session includes a proof gallery, and clients are able to purchase only the digital images or prints they truly love—whether that’s digital files, prints, wall art, or albums.

Photography may no longer be my full-time (or even part-time) career, but it remains a professional craft that I take seriously. My pricing reflects the time, experience, and care that goes into creating each portrait experience.

After twenty years behind the camera, I’ve learned that the most meaningful photographs happen when people feel comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely themselves.

That’s always been the goal—and it continues to guide every session I create.

Rooted in Laramie

For now, all portrait sessions will take place in and around Laramie, Wyoming.

At this time, I’m not traveling back to Colorado for portrait sessions. That may change in the future, but for this season I’m focused on building connections and creative work right here in our new community.

One of the things I appreciate about Laramie is the strong network of talented photographers who serve the community in different ways.

Some specialize in weddings.
Some focus on sports or events.
Others run full-time photography studios.

There’s room for everyone.

If I receive inquiries that fall outside the work I’m currently offering—such as weddings, sports, or large events, or even a different style I don’t offer—I’m always happy to refer clients to other wonderful photographers in town.

Community matters here, and I’m grateful to be part of it.

Looking Ahead

This new chapter feels both humbling and exciting.
