Fall Senior Portrait Session with Golden Light

Some portrait sessions come together so perfectly that I can’t help but pause and thank God for His timing. This senior session was one of those.

We had originally scheduled his shoot earlier in the month—but Colorado weather made us pivot! Wind is a no-go when you have perfect curls, even for guys. I’m so glad we got to wait, because when we rescheduled, we landed right in what I lovingly call the best week of the year—that rare window when the leaves glow gold, the air feels crisp but gentle, and Northern Colorado looks like it’s been painted with light.

The result? A fall session full of color, strength, and quiet confidence.

Character That Shines Through the Lens

This young man was a joy to photograph—respectful, easygoing, and grounded. When I asked about his plans for the future, he smiled and said, “Whatever the Lord wants—but I would really like a wife and kids.”

That simple answer stopped me for a second. In a culture that celebrates hustle and image, hearing a young person talk about faith, family, and purpose with such clarity gave me hope. It’s moments like that that remind me why I love senior photography after nineteen years behind the camera.

When I started this career, I was only a few years older than my seniors. These days, I could easily be their mom—and that perspective changes everything. I see senior portraits not just as a milestone for the student, but for their parents too.

Every time I photograph a senior, I think about the mom who will hang that portrait on the wall, the dad who might see his child’s confidence reflected back in that image, and the family who will someday look back and say, “That was the year everything was about to change.”

Golden Light, Authentic Color

For this session, we leaned into natural tones that matched his personality—greens, blues, and a touch of yellow to echo the leaves behind him. The setting sun filtered through the trees, wrapping everything in that classic Northern Colorado glow.

He brought three distinct looks that worked perfectly with the scenery:

  • Casual classic: a black tee and jeans against glowing fields—simple, timeless, and confident.
  • Layered and earthy: a soft green pullover surrounded by warm autumn color.
  • Letterman pride: his varsity jacket—crisp navy and white, accented with gold pins that caught the light just right.

Each outfit told a little more of his story—student, athlete, young man of faith.

A Photographer’s Process: From Patience to Polish

I’m often asked why I don’t share client images right away. The answer is simple: I only hand-edit what clients order. That allows me to pour time and attention into their chosen favorites, creating polished, true-to-life portraits that will hold up beautifully for years to come.

Sometimes that means families wait a few weeks before they see their final signature edits on my website or blog. And I love that my clients (and their friends!) patiently follow along through behind-the-scenes reels and stories until it’s their turn.

Why Fall in Northern Colorado (and Beyond) Is Perfect for Seniors

If you’ve ever driven through the plains and foothills in October, you know that golden light I’m talking about. Fall in Northern Colorado—and the surrounding Wyoming corridor—is breathtaking. Every year, I tell my clients, “I could have autumn 9 months of the year & be super happy!”

God paints those trees & skies in a way that no filter could ever match, and as a photographer, I just do my best to honor that beauty through color, light, and expression.

Whether you’re in Greeley, Windsor, Fort Collins, or Laramie, this area offers endless options for senior portraits: open fields, rustic textures, winding trails, and soft light that flatters everyone.

For Parents: This Is Your Milestone Too

I’ve worked with families long enough to know that senior portraits aren’t just about capturing a face—they’re about preserving a season.

You’ve spent years cheering from the sidelines, packing lunches, and praying through every exam, growth spurt, and hard day. And now here they are: standing in front of the camera, ready to launch into the next chapter.

I always remind parents—this isn’t the end of childhood; it’s the celebration of everything you’ve invested along the way.

A Note to Future Seniors (and Their Parents)

If you’re starting to think about senior portraits—whether for the Class of 2026 (and you are behind on your to-do list!) or class 2027—now is a wonderful time to reach out. I just reserved two sessions for June & October of 2026, because they wanted prime-time spots! Sessions fill up quickly once spring and summer roll around, and fall spots are limited since the leaves are at their peak for a limited time!
