People often ask what I enjoy most about being a photographer… and truthfully, it’s hard to choose just one thing. But at the heart of it, I love capturing stories. People matter. Their milestones matter.
It’s an honor to celebrate those moments—whether I’m quietly observing from behind the lens or offering posing prompts and singing along to spark a smile. I take it all in: the in-between glances, the deep belly laughs, and even the quiet tears of joy people try not to let fall.
Everyone has a different story, and it’s never linear. Some of the best ones are a little salty, a little gritty—but held together by grace and love across time.
This particular session took place during golden hour in early July, surrounded by tall grasses, aged trees, and the kind of light that feels like a blessing peeking through the branches. I’m so glad we were able to document this family—right before they each head into new directions and a whole new chapter of their journey.

The Beauty in Transitions
Sometimes a session isn’t just about updated portraits. It’s about honoring the moment you’re in—the complexity, the gratitude, the letting go.
For this session, I think we could all feel the ache in the excitement for these two ready to leave for a new country, new adventures… even more so: as newlyweds. It’s a lot to hold.

But they all showed so beautifully! Together.

This kind of session reminds me that photography is more than posed smiles and good outfits. It’s presence. I love that this momma even bought flower bouquets to celebrate the moment. It’s marking the ground where a new fork in the road is carved ahead, and celebrating what they have walked through—side by side.
Behind the Lens: What Anchors Me
When I step into a session, regardless of my day, my focus always shifts to the people in front of me. Their story becomes my compass. Their connection—the way they move together, speak with their eyes, or hold each other just a second longer—is what guides how I pose, prompt and shoot, how I frame, and how I edit.

I am always humbled by families like this one—where you can see the legacy flowing down into the next generation. Where honor, resilience, and love are not just spoken values but lived ones.

These are the sessions that go far beyond “just a few quick photos before the kids leave on their next adventure.” They become something deeper—something worth preserving. The “good enough” approach with your own camera or cell phone simply doesn’t hold up for milestones like these. And even a well-meaning tripod setup adds layers of complication when posing, prompting, and lighting all need to be thoughtfully coordinated. These moments deserve more—because they’re more.

These are what I call heirloom moments.
Whether they become immediate desktop wallpapers, are shared on social media, become giant 20×30 gallery wrap this month, or look back in an album of these 10 years from now… I know this family will be glad they paused and preserved this chapter.

Every Family Is a Living Story
What stood out to me wasn’t just how beautifully this family coordinated (though they did!). It was how they interacted when no one was prompted. The subtle glances. The hand around the waist. The way they made room for each other in the frame and in life. Even the grown brothers asked for “one more pose” at the end of the session. They see the value in what we are doing!

These are the moments I live for—the ones you don’t always get to stage, but notice if you’re paying attention.
As a Northern Colorado photographer, I get to witness so many versions of connection: long-married couples who still laugh easily, siblings who tease with tenderness, and grown kids who show up with reverence for what their parents built.

Seniors, Sons, and Family Growth
It’s always special to see familiar faces return to my lens. One of the sons I photographed for his senior portraits just a couple of years ago is now in college and doing great! (Remember the 90s vibes he brought to the party?)

I love checking in with former seniors—asking them if they stayed the course or had a pivot yet. Either way, it’s never a waste. Perspective is a gift. I remember each of my clients – little glimmers of details as I told them when we greeted each other at the start of their session and I’m thankful for each one.
Client Experience, the HLP Way
Serving my clients well means more than delivering beautiful photos. It means learning your story. Asking the quiet questions. Reading the room. Noticing what’s said—and what isn’t.
It’s why I keep my sessions relational and relaxed, never rushed. It’s not just about capturing a good photo; it’s about honoring your season. Whether you’re in a chapter of celebration or transition—or both—I want you to feel seen.

A Gentle Nudge
If you’re thinking about scheduling family photos but aren’t sure it’s the “right time,” consider this: there is no perfect time. There’s only now.
And maybe now is when you pause—before someone leaves for school, before a move, before the next thing—and say, “Let’s remember this part, too.”
I’d love to help you do that.
