Black and White Senior Portraits Greeley CO | Heather Lilly Photography

When it comes to black and white senior portraits in Greeley CO, sometimes the mood, grit, and movement say more than color ever could.

While I don’t share a lot of black and white portraits on my blog, there are moments when a full series just feels right in monochrome. This was one of those sessions.

I’ve known this senior’s mom for about a decade (if you are reading this: hey, friend!), and I remember when this senior was just a little girl. P.S. No “senior mom” is okay during the entire month of April or May—so just be gentle and send them support!

Now here she is, finishing high school, with confidence and poise that most adults are still learning to master. She’s a dancer. Graceful, grounded, joyful. And during her senior session, she let her guard down in the best way. The result? A gallery full of movement and story from a mix of illustrative prompts and posed images. She got the best of both worlds. 🙂

Yes, I have these images in color. And yes—they’re stunning that way, too. But there’s something about the texture of light and shadow, the way her dress moves, the laughter in between still moments, that shines in black and white. It lets you focus on the emotion without the distraction of color. It slows things down.

The Art of Choosing Black & White

Black and white images are not a filter or an afterthought.

As a photographer, choosing black and white is a creative decision I make when the story calls for it. It’s about tone, texture, and storytelling. Sometimes, I’ll convert an image because the emotion is more powerful without the influence of color. Other times, it’s about grit—the kind that gives an image depth and makes you feel something you can’t quite name.

There’s a fine line between overusing black and white and using it with intention. That’s why I don’t offer every gallery in both color and monochrome. Instead, I selectively choose moments that are better told this way—where the light, lines, and movement come together in a way that feels cinematic.

My goal with every client is “natural yet polished.” Sometimes that looks like bright and airy color palettes. Other times it leans more editorial, true-to-color, or expressive. Every gallery is shaped with the client in mind—and every creative choice has purpose.

Black and White Senior Portraits and Movement

Senior portraits are more than posed smiles and staged backdrops. They’re a celebration of where you’ve been and where you’re headed. And when you bring movement into the session—like dancing, twirling, laughing, walking—something shifts. The camera catches glimpses of real personality. That’s when the portraits go from nice to unforgettable.

In this session, every spin, every flick of hair, every sidelong glance was filled with life. Black and white senior portraits in Greeley CO emphasize the story behind the movement. They give your eye a reason to linger.

2026 Seniors: It’s Your Turn

As the Class of 2025 puts on their caps and gowns and walks across that stage, the next group of seniors is stepping into the spotlight.

If you’re a 2026 senior (or the proud parent of one), now is the time to start thinking about your portraits. Fall dates are always the first to go, and summer fills up fast. The earlier we start planning, the more freedom we have to choose your ideal location, wardrobe, and session vibe.

I photograph seniors throughout Northern Colorado, including:

  • Greeley
  • Windsor
  • Severance
  • Eaton
  • Timnath
  • Johnstown
  • Milliken
  • Erie, Longmont, Niwot (limited availability, usually once a month during busy season)

My home base is Greeley, and most of my sessions are within a 20-mile radius, but I travel to Erie and surrounding areas quarterly for returning families and referral clients.

What to Expect When You Book

I approach every senior session with a blend of guided posing and space to just be yourself. We’ll talk, we’ll laugh, and I’ll gently direct you through poses that feel natural and flattering. And in between those moments? That’s where the movement lives—walking through golden grass, spinning in your favorite dress, brushing hair out of your face with a real smile.

My editing style reflects you: your personality, your vibe, your story. Every gallery is uniquely tailored. If a few black and white senior portraits are included, it’s because they told the story better that way.

To the senior: This is your moment. Your year. Your time to step into who you’re becoming.

To the parent: I see you, too. This season is bittersweet. You’ve poured your heart into this child, and now they’re standing taller, more confident, ready for the next chapter. These photos are for them—but also for you.
